Raising Money for Benin with the Run4Benin 2016!

Every year Materialise organizes the Run4Benin – a company-wide 15km race along the fields surrounding the buildings of our headquarters. It’s a fundraiser organized to sponsor our Summer School in Benin – an initiative which enables local students with management potential to do a university degree and consequently stimulate entrepreneurship in Benin. This year our Medical department was in charge of the organization – and they decided to do things a little differently.

Stimulating Young Entrepreneurs at the Benin Summer School 2016

Started in 2012, the Benin Summer School is one of the social initiatives started up by Materialise. Located in Papané, Benin, the idea behind the program is to select the three best students of the region – and then support these students financially throughout their university studies. The goal is to stimulate the local economy by giving its brightest young citizens the tools to build up useful businesses that last. We work together with a local NGO, Hubi and Vinciane, who helps the two volunteers from Materialise work with the students for two weeks on a project they need to develop and present in order to get selected as part of the final three. Meet Jonas and Dorina, who volunteered to teach the summer school this year.

African Drive Reaches Crowdfunding Target on Bolero Crowdfunding

African Drive is an initiative that was founded three years ago by a group of Belgian entrepreneurs led by our CEO, Fried Vancraen. As part of Chamber’s latest collection, entitled “Progressland” and curated by Andrew Zuckerman, artist Peter Marigold will be exhibiting his 3D Printed sculpture “Trunk”. Situated in New York, Chamber is a unique space in a city bursting with creative energy. A self-described “21st century cabinet of curiosities”, each collection in the art gallery is curated by a different artist who brings their unique perspective through the reliquaries, works of art and experimental designs they choose to display.

Antwerp has long been the fashion capital of Belgium, and young designers from all over the world study at the renowned Fashion Department of the university; at the end of the year they get to present everything they’ve learnt on a real catwalk, with the Master’s students presenting an entire collection.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has finally opened the doors to its latest exhibition: Manus x Machina, the Costume Institute’s new tour de force curated by Andrew Bolton. The exhibition explores the complex dichotomy between handmade haute couture and machine-made prêt-à-porter, and how the boundaries between the two are growing increasingly blurred. Several 3D printed dresses made in collaboration with Materialise have been featured as part of the exhibition’s exploration of technological innovation used in fashion. Materialise Featured in Manus x Machina: The Spring 2016 Exhibition at the Metropolitan

The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is opening the doors to its 2016 spring exhibition on the 5th of May. Entitled “Manus x Machina” and curated by Andrew Bolton, the exhibition promises to be a rich display of innovative couture, featuring fashion powerhouses such as Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Iris van Herpen, Issey Miyake and Balenciaga.

Unfold at Milan Design Week 2016: When Support Structure Becomes Art

Antwerp-based design studio Unfold is constantly pushing the boundaries of how design intersects with modern digital manufacturing. For Milan Design Week 2016, they participated in the Belgian Matters exhibition, curated by Siegrid Demyttenaere for DAMN° magazine, along with 13 other Belgian designers each paired up with a Belgian company. The exhibition is part of a larger framework titled “A Matter of Perception: Tradition & Technology” in the prestigious Palazzo Litta in Milan, Italy. The aim of the exhibition was to showcase how modern technology could be used to enhance and transform traditional furniture design, and together with Unfold, Materialise helped to make their project Skafaldo a reality.

Cyborgs and Fossilized Monsters: Nick Ervinck’s 3D Printed Sculptures

Belgian artist Nick Ervinck explores the boundaries between the physical and the imaginary, the traditional and the modern, architecture and sculpture. Constantly pushing the frontiers on what is spatially possible, he is a pioneer in the use of 3D Printing in art. Although we first collaborated with him in 2008 for his artwork GNIURKS_S, Materialise had the honor of collaborating with him again for his two newest creations: LAPIRSUB and NOITALS.
