The Dream-Like "Lucid" Collection by Iris van Herpen

Vanessa Palsenbarg
March 09, 2016

3D printed dresses created in collaboration with Niccolo Casas and Materialise Iris van Herpen never fails to deliver when it comes to creating an entire sensory experience quite like no other during Paris Fashion Week. I thought that the last show I attended, Biopiracy, would be hard to top as it featured top models vacuum sealed in plastic as the center piece around which the models showed her latest designs. But, since the Lucid collection marked Iris’s exploration of lucid dreaming, a state in which the dreamer is conscious of the dream state and therefore is able to exert a degree of control on what is happening, I knew that this would be an experience to remember. I was not disappointed as the designs, setting and music put the audience in a dream-like state, and models appeared as ghosts behind 17 large optical light screens (OLF).

January 14, 2016

Last night found a well-dressed group of people from Materialise at an illustrious awards ceremony at the BOZAR, the Center for Fine Arts in Brussels. The reason why is that yesterday, Materialise was named the 2015 recipient of the Henry van de Velde Company Award! Accepting the award on behalf of Materialise – in front of a crowd of 1,300 people – was Founder and CEO, Wilfried Vancraen. Design Flanders has been presenting the Henry van de Velde Awards since 1994, with the award serving to confirm the high quality of the work produced and encouraging prize winners to continue to tread the path of experimentation and inventiveness in the creative sectors.

Late every summer at Materialise, there comes a day when professionally dressed people suddenly transform into runners in full gear. That’s when you know it’s the day to Run4Benin. The race, which takes a route through in the green fields around Materialise HQ, raises funds to co-organize a summer school in the small West African country Benin. It also gets people off their office chairs and into their running shoes, which is great.

July 16, 2015

This spring marked the kick-off of the 3rd Ping Pong tournament at Materialise Malaysia, which was the grandest one yet! Composed of 37 players on 17 randomly-organized teams, everyone fought a hard battle despite not yet knowing their partners’ strengths and weaknesses. There were many interesting and unique pairs since Materialise Malaysia is known for its multiracial population. Besides Malaysians of Malay/Chinese/Indian descent, we also had a combination of players from Korea, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and, of course, Belgium!

Curated by Marta Malé-Alemany, held at the BOZAR, and realized thanks to the passion, brilliance and dedication to 3D Printing of individuals throughout the industry (and within Materialise), the exhibition was truly something to be proud of for all involved.

Natural Forms and Technological Instruments: A Look at Mathias Bengtsson’s Big Growth Table

Structures in nature are known for being highly complex and difficult to represent in a designed form. Indeed, designers are often attracted to creating objects which have minimal straight lines, finding beauty and functionality in the simplicity. But what if that challenge could be overcome, and with the help of 3D Printing, complex structures could be digitally broken down and printed back together?
