When you scroll through former posts on this Materialise Medical blog, there are countless examples of the added value of Medical 3D Printing and how the technology is changing the lives of patients everywhere.

Those stories make the clinical benefits of 3D Printing clear, and show just how much of an impact this technology has been having on different medical fields. To make it widely available and gain acceptance from hospitals, doctors, users and policymakers, clinical evidence is crucial.

Various centers worldwide have been setting up studies to gather such evidence, but they are hindered by a lack of consensus on how to achieve this.

By its very nature, 3D Printing has the capacity to provide fully customized, patient-specific solutions. For this reason, the conventional guidelines used to evaluate mass-produced identical devices simply aren’t valid anymore as with 3D Printing for medical devices each device leaving the manufacturing chain is different.

To make the advancements in the field of personalized medicine through 3D Printing sustainable in the long run, change is needed. This is the reason why Materialise has taken the initiative of gathering all the stakeholders in healthcare to work on a common set of guidelines regarding methodologies and assessment methods.

A first event, called “Building Evidence for 3D Printing Applications in Medicine” is going to take place in Orlando, Florida on 19-20 May. This event is hosted by SME and will bring together major players in the 3D Printing industry, as well as key representatives from the medical industry in order to establish a common set of guidelines, which will benefit the industry and ultimately (and most importantly of all) the patients themselves.

There will be plenty of guest speakers, group discussions and workshops which will definitely lead to fruitful dialogue and innovative ideas. We hope to see you there!
