WEBINAR

3D Planning, Patient-Specific Guides and Custom Plates for Corrective Osteotomies

by Dr. Ola Wiig | Pediatric Orthopedics Surgeon at the Oslo University Hospital, Norway

Dr. Wiig presents the challenges of a chronic Slipped Upper Femoral Epiphysis (SUFE) and why he decided not to use more traditional surgical methods but to use a patient-specific guide.

At the beginning of the webinar, he introduces us to an acute and chronic slip. Then he elaborates on some new methods that have been developed in recent years to align these big slips and to put the epiphysis back on the femoral head without disrupting the blood flow (e.g. the Modified Dunn procedure). Illustrating with two slip cases, Dr. Wiig explains why these are surgically very demanding cases and are a big risk for surgeons that don’t do a lot of these cases. There are different possibilities to treat them (e.g. Southwick osteotomy) but for him they were too hard to do, not precise enough and not so potent.

Taking on a case of a 14-year old girl suffering from groin pain for one year, he decided not to go for the traditional methods, but got in touch with Materialise. During the webinar you can see how the planning was done; what the saw guide, the pre- and post-op models and custom-made plate looked like and how he performed the surgery.

What you’ll learn in this webinar

  • What the challenges are when applying different surgical methods on a Slipped Upper Femoral Epiphysis (SUFE) defect
  • What a patient-specific saw guide, the pre- and post-op models and custom-made plate look like
  • The practical advantages experienced when having an anatomical model at hand
  • Why Dr. Wiig believes that this is a very safe and easy method of correcting big deformities in the proximal femur

Custom plates are currently not available, the alternative is standard plates

About the speaker

Dr. Wiig is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon with a special interest in hip preservation surgery. He has a PhD and has many years of experience in general pediatric orthopedic surgery working at the Oslo University Hospital. He has skills and expertise in fractures, trauma surgery, diagnosis, hip surgery, orthopedics and especially pediatric orthopedics.

Materialise got in touch with Dr. Wiig in 2015 when he was looking for a treatment plan for a young patient. Dr. Wiig’s colleague, Dr. John Slåstad, has successfully treated several patients with severe bone loss using 3D-printed Materialise aMace custom implants. Knowing this, Dr. Wiig contacted Materialise to investigate whether it was possible to use this technology to better understand and secure full correction of this severe deformity in 3D.
