This year’s global winner, Dr. Alessandro Tel, and the team directed by Prof. Robiony at the University Hospital of Udine, department of Maxillo Facial Surgery, have developed an endoscopic procedure for the reconstruction of internal orbital floor fractures. Using this approach, they achieved several advantages, including avoidance external scars, anatomically correct reconstruction of the orbital floor, resolution of enophthalmos and diplopia, minimal discomfort for the patient and substantial reduction of costs.
With this research on the impact of computer-aided surgery (CAS) on the overall accuracy of reconstruction to achieve the triple objective of restoring anatomy, volume, and function, they have taken innovative steps in an inspiring new approach to personalized care.

Pieter is a passionate healthcare innovator, driven to create clinical value for patients and caregivers by addressing meaningful applications with 3D technology. After obtaining his engineering degree and Ph.D. on medical image processing at KU Leuven, he became committed to the mission of Materialise to create a better and healthier world. There, he introduced solutions to help hospitals around the world run certified point-of-care 3D printing activity.
Today, Pieter is one of the drivers for innovation in the medical team at Materialise, aiming to make mass personalization in healthcare a reality by following customer-centric design strategies in collaboration with clinical and technology experts and partners.
Fried Vancraen, Founder, CEO Materialise NV
Wilfried Vancraen has served as one of our directors and as our Chief Executive Officer since founding Materialise in July 1990 to help create a better and healthier world. Mr. Vancraen holds several patents related to the technical and medical applications of 3D printing and remains committed to using the technology for positive changes in people’s lives.
In recent years, Mr. Vancraen has been awarded the RTAM/SME Industry Achievement Award, the highest honor in the 3D printing industry, has been selected as the most influential person in additive manufacturing by industry professionals and TCT Magazine, and has been listed as one of the five leading players in his sector by the Financial Times. He is also the recipient of a 2013 Visionaries! award from the Museum of Art and Design in New York. Mr. Vancraen holds a Master of Science in Electro-Mechanical Engineering and a Master in Business Administration from KU Leuven. Fried was included in the TCT Hall of Fame in 2017 for his contributions to the 3D printing industry.
Dr. Alessandro Tel
Dr. Alessandro Tel currently works under the guidance of Prof. Massimo Robiony, head of Maxillofacial Surgery department of Udine, full professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and founder of Facial Care Project, a technological and humanizing project focused on leading Maxillofacial Surgery to the highest levels. During classes at university, Dr. Tel met Prof. Robiony and started a technological project focused on taking virtual surgical planning at surgeon’s hands, incorporating elements of CAD design in surgical knowledge to solve complex scenarios. Dr. Tel had his degree in Medicine and Surgery.
The foundation of the “3D printing and virtual planning Lab” in 2018 brought together the needs of many professionals of multiple specialties and allowed the acquisition of the Mimics Innovation Suite and two 3D printers. Future horizons envisage the acquisition of even greater confidence with MIS, the ability to perform complex validation studies on designed devices, especially finite element analyses, and the use of new hardware systems, such as more advanced 3D printers and augmented reality devices.
