Meaningful Innovations in Personalized Care: Combining 3D Planning, Computer-Aided Design, Additive Manufacturing, and Mixed Reality

By Dr. Masahide Koyachi, Fried Vancraen, Dr. Akira Katakura/Professor

Dr. Koyachi and his team perform CMF surgery, assisted by virtual reality.

The Mimics Innovation Awards celebrate the most meaningful innovations in personalized care and open our minds to new and previously unimaginable possibilities.

This year’s global winner is Dr. Masahide Koyachi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral Pathobiological Science and Surgery at Tokyo Dental College in Tokyo, Japan. Dr. Koyachi combines various intra-operative technologies such as surgical guides and mixed reality to transfer virtual surgical plans to patients. He applies these technologies in cranio-maxillofacial surgery.

The winning research paper describes the validation of the accuracy and reproducibility of these surgical planning and transfer technologies for maxilla repositioning surgery (Le Fort 1). It demonstrates the strong performance of state-of-the-art 3D technologies, including the current and future potential for mixed reality, and thereby contributes to the expansion of personalized care in craniomaxillofacial surgery.

During this webinar, you will learn:

  • How 3D technologies such as surgical planning, 3D printing, and mixed reality can help physicians ensure accurate and reproducible surgical executions

  • How 3D printing and mixed reality can become complementary technologies in supporting CMF surgery

  • Why this research has been selected as the global winner of the Mimics Innovation Awards in an interview with Fried Vancraen, Founder and CEO of Materialise
