This year’s global winner is Dr. Masahide Koyachi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral Pathobiological Science and Surgery at Tokyo Dental College in Tokyo, Japan. Dr. Koyachi combines various intra-operative technologies such as surgical guides and mixed reality to transfer virtual surgical plans to patients. He applies these technologies in cranio-maxillofacial surgery.
The winning research paper describes the validation of the accuracy and reproducibility of these surgical planning and transfer technologies for maxilla repositioning surgery (Le Fort 1). It demonstrates the strong performance of state-of-the-art 3D technologies, including the current and future potential for mixed reality, and thereby contributes to the expansion of personalized care in craniomaxillofacial surgery.

Since founding Materialise in July 1990 to help create a better and healthier world, Wilfried Vancraen has served as one of our directors and as our Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Vancraen holds several patents related to the technical and medical applications of 3D printing and remains committed to using the technology for positive changes in people’s lives.
In recent years, Mr. Vancraen has been awarded the RTAM/SME Industry Achievement Award, the highest honor in the 3D printing industry, has been selected as the most influential person in additive manufacturing by industry professionals and TCT Magazine, and has been listed as one of the five leading players in his sector by the Financial Times. He is also the recipient of a 2013 Visionaries! award from the Museum of Art and Design in New York. Mr. Vancraen holds a Master of Science in Electro-Mechanical Engineering and a Master in Business Administration from KU Leuven. Fried was included in the TCT Hall of Fame in 2017 for his contributions to the 3D printing industry.
Dr. Masahide Koyachi

Dr. Masahide Koyachi began his studies at Hokkaido University’s School of Dental Medicine in 2009, before beginning his career in the Department of Dentistry and Oral Surgery at Nikko Memorial Hospital in Muroran, Japan, in 2016. By 2020, he had moved to the Department of Oral Pathobiological Science and Surgery in the Tokyo Dental College, where he is currently an Assistant Professor.
His interest in combining 3D technologies and mixed realities in CMF surgery inspired his winning entry in the 2021 Mimics Innovation Awards.
