The Use of 3D-Printed Pelvic Models for Complex Acetabular and Femoral Reconstructions

Brian Haus, M.D., as a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, talks about how he is using 3D-printed medical models to prepare hip surgeries and how the use of these models have given him new insights.
He introduces us to hip preservation surgery or complex deformity correction and the different complex, heterogeneous problems and objectives linked to it. Compared to radiographs he sees tremendous potential for computer modeling and 3D Printing in helping to perform an accurate amount of correction to maximize patient outcomes.
During the webinar, he demonstrates two case examples, one of a 15 year-old patient with hip dysplasia and one of a 17 year-old female with Perthes Deformity with impingement and hip displacement. Dr. Haus shows us how pre-operative 3D scans helped him to plan using the Materialise Mimics software. When the analysis and planning was all done, he takes us through the process of printing the models and using them before and during surgery for these specific cases.

Brian Haus, M.D. studied at the University of California in Berkeley and Stanford University. After his studies, he started working as an Orthopedic Surgery Resident at Harvard Medical School. Afterwards he became a Fellow in the Department of Sport Medicine and Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital, moving on to the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland. He now is Chief of the Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery at UC Davis Children’s Hospital and Director of Pediatric Sports Medicine and Joint Preservation at Shriners Hospital, Northern California. Dr. Haus has done 20 cases using hip models and finds it useful in preoperative planning for complex cases.
