The Henry van de Velde Awards are given by Design Flanders every year in Belgium to honor the best design of the year. And it’s only logical that an awards ceremony celebrating good design should have a uniquely designed trophy! Design Flanders turned to us to create twelve trophies for the winners of 2016.
The surface of Materialise engineer Giovanni Vleminckx’s desk is covered in stone-grey 3D prints. Gears, hinges, interlocking links, and the odd Yoda-like figurine. Meet the first test prints of the widely anticipated HP Jet Fusion 3D printer! Announced last autumn, the news of the HP Multi Jet Fusion technology quickly spread waves of excitement throughout the 3D printing world — and Materialise is privileged with prior access to the new technology. Giovanni, as a researcher and engineer in our production unit, got the opportunity to run frequent tests on the machine. Here’s what he thinks.
Dutch company Vanderlande handles logistics automation, making processes in warehouses more efficient and streamlined. Imagine the warehouse of the future, with rows upon rows of crates that seem to know exactly where they’re going. When multinational supermarket chain Albert Heijn was looking for a new, automated layout for its main distribution center, Vanderlande stepped in to provide it. Materialise 3D-printed their highly complex automated distribution center with a scale model, so that they could clearly show their clients what the new system offered.
This weekend at Mido, an international optics and eyewear trade show in Milan, onlookers were able to discover something unique: or should we say Yuniku? Following last year’s announcement of Yuniku, the world’s first vision-centric 3D-tailored eyewear, Hoet Design Studio and Aoyama Optical France have jumped on board, adding two new collections of 3D-printed eyewear to the platform: Cabrio and We DDD respectively.
“Innovation is my mission statement,” says Bieke Hoet, owner of the Hoet Design Studio. And you can see it in her latest collection of 3D-printed eyewear frames: Hoet Cabrio SX, launched at Silmo 2016. Designed in collaboration with the Belgian indie pop duo SX, this striking new collection features a radically new approach to eyewear design. Out with pinched angles and unflattering edges, in with organic design and fluid lines. Meet Cabrio SX, the newest work of art in the long-running partnership between Hoet Design Studio and Materialise.
The art of making lace is complex and labor-intensive, and dates back centuries. It also has a strong history in both Italy and Belgium, which makes the collaboration between Italian knitwear foundation Lineapiù, knitwear manufacturer Maglificio Miles, and Materialise all the more natural.
The Trophée PME Bougeons-Nous was created six years ago to reward local small and medium enterprises in France for their innovation, enthusiasm and energy. Last week Aoyama Optical France, one of our key partners in eyewear, took home the Export prize due to the high percentage of 3D-printed glasses they export outside of France. Their collaboration with Materialise has been part of a larger initiative to bring back eyewear manufacturing to Europe.
If you wear glasses, you know that finding the right frames can be a challenge, to say the least. They have to have the right style, right color, and of course, a comfortable fit. However, did you know that the frames you choose could potentially affect your vision?
Opening on the 21st of July – Belgium’s National Day – BELvue Museum is launching its new permanent exhibition, which celebrates nearly two centuries of Belgian accomplishments in history, design and innovation. Visitors will be able to follow the history of Belgium, which will be illustrated by plenty of unique artefacts including Val-Saint-Lambert crystal, the motorcycle of King Albert II, a football signed by the Red Devils and most excitingly for us, two objects printed in 3D by Materialise!
Dr. Matthew Allen, Professor of Small Animal Surgery at the University of Cambridge, was faced with a challenging case when he encountered Bella, the Romanian Bucovina Shepherd dog. Bella was plagued with severe mobility problems due to an extremely painful knee joint which had been damaged by disease from a young age.
