As many of our avid followers may know, .MGX is Materialise’s design brand and is often in the press for its items winning awards or being acquired by world-renowned museums. Most recently, the Patrick Jouin designed, Materialise 3D printed Bloom lamp was acquired by the Montreal Museum of Fine Art.

Patrick Jouin, has been 3D printing his designs since 2004. Until then, 3D Printing had only been used for small “scale models” and together with .MGX, he took the entire process to a whole new level. The collaboration produced items once thought impossible to produce, and his Bloom lamp is just one example.
Since it has been printed, the Bloom table lamp has been flexing its hinges, changing from a bud to a blossom, all around the world. It has received attention, winning both a Good Design and Red Dot Design Award, and has been acquired by the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, and now will also be in the permanent collection of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The museum is no stranger to .MGX designs: the museum also has the Fractal.MGX table by WertelOberfell and the Solid C2 chair by Patrick Jouin in their collection.

The Bloom table lamp (inv. no 2013.90.1-3) was a gift to the MMFA from Dr. Brian Stonehocker in honor of Rosalind Pepall, Curator at the MMFA from 1991-2012.
