Sherhryar Khan, Application Engineer at the DLP Competence Centre in Malaysia, measured the impact of our support generation software for bottom-up technology and shares the result of the DLP knowledge center with you.
Some of the big benefits of 3D Printing for aerospace are design freedom, short lead times and the creation of lighter and more durable components. The latter leads to a smaller carbon footprint and less fuel consumption. But how can you get the most out of the technology?
The surface of Materialise engineer Giovanni Vleminckx’s desk is covered in stone-grey 3D prints. Gears, hinges, interlocking links, and the odd Yoda-like figurine. Meet the first test prints of the widely anticipated HP Jet Fusion 3D printer! Announced last autumn, the news of the HP Multi Jet Fusion technology quickly spread waves of excitement throughout the 3D printing world — and Materialise is privileged with prior access to the new technology. Giovanni, as a researcher and engineer in our production unit, got the opportunity to run frequent tests on the machine. Here’s what he thinks.
The automotive industry is an early adopter of 3D printing technology, initially benefitting from Rapid Prototyping to finalize new car concepts. SL Corporation is an automotive parts manufacturer based in Korea, who was able to cut their lead-times significantly and reduce costs by incorporating 3D Printing into their production.
Catheter-based interventions are often the therapy of choice when treating the cardiovascular system of fragile and weak patients. Though often much less invasive than alternative treatments, this technique has its own limitations: it risks dislodging plaque or calcium into the circulatory system as well as potentially damaging, rupturing or penetrating the arterial walls. Also, imaging and the extensive use of contrast agent are not without risk.
Materialise Mimics has often made a difference in the lives of hospital patients. But it isn’t only doctors and surgeons who are implementing our technology in beneficial ways – Dr. Stephen Brusatte at the University of Edinburgh is using 3D visualization to analyze dinosaur fossils -such as Tyrannosaurus-, which enables him to learn more about how evolution works over widespread timescales.
Dr. Stephen Brusatte doesn’t use Materialise Mimics to study the human body – he uses it to improve his understanding of dinosaur fossils. As the leader of the Vertebrate Paleontology Research Group at the University of Edinburgh, Dr. Brusatte is fascinated by one dinosaur species in particular: the Tyrannosaurus rex, infamous king of the dinosaurs and terrifying predator.
If you wear glasses, you know that finding the right frames can be a challenge, to say the least. They have to have the right style, right color, and of course, a comfortable fit. However, did you know that the frames you choose could potentially affect your vision?
The shoulder is a truly extraordinary joint, as it allows a full 180-degree range of vertical and horizontal motion. Unfortunately, the downside of this flexibility is that the more a joint can do, the more that can go wrong. The shoulder joint can wear out due to age, infection or trauma, leading to pain and a loss of function. When it comes to researching solutions to these problems, the shoulder surgeons at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute (FOI) and the researchers at the Foundation for Orthopaedic Research & Education (FORE) in Tampa, Florida, lead the way as one of the most reputable shoulder research collaborations in the world.
This week, Microsoft 3D Builder users were finally able to start printing their designs through our consumer 3D printing service, i.materialise. This is just the first of many Microsoft 3D printing platform applications which will allow users to print their models with i.materialise, and although we announced this collaboration for the first time in May, it’s exciting to see those plans become concrete reality! Our i.materialise team is definitely looking forward to working together with the team over at Microsoft to improve the 3D printing experience for the members of the Windows community.
